Villanova Sophomore Running Back Ja’briel Mace Made History Nov. 8

Ja'briel Mace made Villanova football history when he beat Brian Westbrook's record for most rushing yards in a game.

Villanova University sophomore running back Ja’briel Mace had his moments Nov. 8 against Towson University when he rushed for 291 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns.

It was the best game of his college career. More than that, it was one for the Villanova history books. He broke Villanova legend Brian Westbrook’s record for most rushing yards in a game, writes Gabriella Galati for 6abc.

Mace got his chance when two running backs ahead of him were knocked out of the game.

“Brian’s the best one that’s ever played here,” said head coach Mark Ferrante. “He texted us later on that day and goes, ‘What the heck, why didn’t you guys take him out before he broke my record? Who’s running the ship over there?’ Ferrante recalled, jokingly.

Westbrook later sent Mace a congratulatory video.

To Mace, it was his teammates who carried him.

“My O-line,” Mace said. “I literally credit them with every single run that I had. They’re just amazing upfront. When everyone does their job, it’s amazing.”

Ferrante said Mace has a great attitude about himself and about his team, describing him as a hard worker who’s “very unselfish.”
