Tanner Maddocks, Creator of Athletes Squared, Also Plays Some Villanova Football

Tanner Maddocks is balancing a lot between running a startup, earning a degree, raising his new daughter and playing football for the Wildcats.

Tanner Maddocks is working hard, mind and body, writes Elijah McDow for Main Line Today.

Three years ago,  the 21-year-old Villanova University senior created Athlete Squared,  a video training app that links young athletes with college players for personalized training and coaching.

Athlete Squared debuted last year and had 1,300 users nationwide in its first 12 months.

Maddocks also plays for the Wildcats football team and is up for the starting quarterback position this fall.

The position isn’t guaranteed as he competes with fellow senior Pat McQuaide, who’s already had the starting role.

Still, Maddocks’ popularity with his teammates and coaches could help.

“Tyler has grown up in a lot of different ways, on and off the field,” said Wildcats offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chris Boden. “He’s continually gotten better every year. He spends a lot of time in our offices studying and watching film.”

Many of his teammates admire his work ethic as Maddock runs his startup, plays for the Wildcats, pursues a communications degree and takes care of his first child, Maia, with his wife, Elyse.

“It’s a hard balance,” says Maddocks of his busy life. “You’re saying no to a lot of things that you want to say yes to.”
