The Clam Tavern is a Clifton Heights staple where generations gather to enjoy delicious yet unfussy food, great hospitality and genuinely good vibes, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.
“This is called the hospitality business,” said Clam Tavern owner Tony Blanche. “We’re here to spread joy and cheer.”
He proved that he lives by that credo recently, when two sisters found a $25 Clam Tavern gift certificate from 1984 while sorting through their late mother’s possessions. Though it had already long expired and was issued well before Blanche bought the restaurant 25 years ago, he was still happy to honor the 40-year-old gift certificate.
Blanche regularly makes the long drive to Newfield, New Jersey, in his 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible to buy the prized Sweet Amalia oysters. These are widely regarded as being among the best on the market and cannot be shipped to Delaware County, demonstrating his dedication to serving only the finest seafood to his customers.
In essence, he wants to make sure that his patrons are happy, which in return brings him great joy.
