A fresh fruit tradition continued on Baltimore Pike Tuesday afternoon when more than 100 people lined up at the bright orange tractor-trailer in the Springfield Mall parking lot to pick up their order of fresh peaches.
The Peach Truck Tour has been traversing the country since 2012, dropping off orders of fresh Georgia peaches, writes Maria Pownall for the Daily Times.
Springfield was No. 4 on the 10-stop tour. Weeks before the truck’s arrival, customers preordered the peaches from a website. Customers opted for a 12-pound or 25-pound box of newly-picked fruit.
Customers started showing up around noon, despite the high temperatures, and by 1 PM, the line snaked around the parking lot.
Some couldn’t wait until they got home, opening boxes and sampling the peaches on site.
During the wait, discussions circulated about peach pies, cobblers, preserves, and canning.
On future menus would be peach cheesecake, spicy peach jam, peach salsa, peach dumplings, and peach kuchen, a German-style cake with a buttery crust and sour cream filling topped with saucy peach slices.
One overheated woman waiting in line was asked what she would make.
“I’m not sure, but a peach smoothie sounds really good right now.”
