Andrew Brandt, a sports agent and front office executive, has been teaching Villanova University’s sports law program since 2012, showing students how to navigate the business world of college athletics, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Brandt was brought in to direct the Villanova program because of his 10 years as vice president of the Green Bay Packers, and because of his experience running the Barcelona Dragons as the youngest general manager in sports back in 1991.
“It was a great experience looking back because I had to figure it out. It was all new,” Brandt said of the Dragons. “It steeled me for later in life. Nothing I did for the Packers was harder than that.”
Brandt was also someone who represented players and advised Howie Roseman, the Philadelphia Eagles general manager.
The program covered everything from salary-cap management to the constantly evolving world of name, image, and likeness deals.
A critical element of the three-year program is the Sports Law Negotiation teams, which compete all over the country, challenging law students to act like sports agents and general managers.
The Villanova students log nearly 50 hours in a semester working on the negotiation team.
