Liam Edelstein, a 15-year-old from West Chester, owns the 1960 Eagles NFL Championship trophy that belonged to former Eagles owner James P. Clark, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Eight years ago, while visiting his grandparents in Florida, Liam’s uncle, Eric Hisam, told Edelstein about the trophy. Hisam had brought it from his aunt’s home in Philadelphia. His uncle, Max Leven, was the jeweler who created the award.
While there was no official trophy in 1960, the sterling silver Vince Lombardi Trophy debuted in 1967. Leven, who was good friends with Clark, presented him with the trophy he made after the championship win. It remained with the family until the death of Clark’s wife, Peg, in 1976. Her estate went to Leven’s wife, Florence.
Hisam gifted the trophy to the teen, who lives near Philadelphia and is a diehard Eagles fan.
A few months after the trophy returned to Philadelphia, the Eagles won their first Super Bowl.
“We joke in the family that we’re the reason the Eagles have had success,” said the teen’s father.
The family places the trophy on the couch each week during games and sometimes rubs it for good luck.
