A trophy company in Chester is ending a 70-year legacy of engraving plates for a worldwide clientele of celebrities in sports, entertainment, and politics.
Sandrose Trophies at 1 W. Ninth Street has been acquired by Spikes Trophies of Philadelphia, writes Colin Ainsworth for the Daily Times.
The three-generation family business survived natural disasters and personal struggles, but the fallout from the COVID-19 lockdowns finally convinced owner Jason Allen to look for a buyer.
The sale was finalized Dec. 11.
“It just got too much for me,” Allen said. Besides a six- to seven-day work week, Sandrose also offered Saturday retail hours.
Spikes Trophies purchased the business, while an unspecified buyer purchased the building. Commercial and residential redevelopment for the building is planned.
Allen’s received good wishes from more than 100 city residents who have visited the showroom since the November closure announcement. There have also been about 500 phone calls and 1,000 emails from customers.
Since the business opened in 1953, it has made trophies for the likes of Dr. “J” Julius Irving, Pete Rose and Tommy John, Don Rickles, Sammy Davis Jr., Sen. Robert Kennedy, and presidents Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon.
