Jasmine Bascoe’s Villanova Success Is Inspired by a Wildcats Legend

Villanova freshman Jasmine Bascoe has been the lead scorer for the Villanova Wildcats this season.

Villanova Wildcat freshman Jasmine Bascoe is having a pretty good season as Villanova’s leading scorer this basketball season, writes Katie Lewis for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

She credits NBA player Jalen Brunson as her inspiration

Bascoe used to watch Brunson play from her home in Milton, Ontario, and knew she wanted to play point guard at Villanova.

Brunson, a New York Knicks guard, helped lead the Wildcats to national championships in 2016 and 2018.

“I just loved watching [Brunson] growing up. If I can shape my game around how he plays, that’s what I’m trying to do,” Bascoe said. “I think Villanova is the perfect spot for how I play.”

Bascoe said committing to Villanova as a high school junior was an “easy” decision, as she followed in the footsteps of a basketball family that has played at Canadian colleges and at Bucknell.

Villanova, she said, “feels real.”

“The coaches [at Villanova] were really transparent and open with me.”

Coach Denise Dillon expected Bascoe to contribute from the moment she came to the campus, and she did.

“We talked to her and told her, ‘You’re going to be thrown in the fire right away,’ and she’s responded,” Dillon said.
