Elwyn CEO Charles McLister in Media Makes Admired CEO Series
Philadelphia Business Journal recognized Elwyn CEO Charles McLister as one of its most admired CEOs in 2024.
The resolute CEO, originally from Pittsburgh, has headed the Media-based nonprofit for more than seven years and has turned around its finances.
Elwyn, through recapitalization, has seen a 72 percent increase in net assets since 2020 and a compound annual growth rate of 6 percent since 2018,.writes Lisa Dukart for Philadelphia Business Journal.
Elwyn serves over 25,000 individuals with autism, intellectual and development disabilities and other behavioral health challenges.
Since McLister took over, Elwyn has gone from an operating loss to posting positive operating income.
The turnaround includes modernizing Elwyn’s real estate portfolio, selling unused and outdated holdings while investing $39 million in new and essential facilities.
McLister has also created an employee engagement department, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
A key moment for him as CEO came when he publicly announced Elwyn’s living wage initiative in April 2019.
He believes in “doing well by being good,” in that the interests of stakeholders, employees and communities should coexist with financial sustainability.
His vision for the 172-year-old institution includes restructuring its advancement department to produce an 80 percent growth over five years.
