Darby and Yeadon Police Officers, Brothers, Save Choking Infant

The two brothers who serve on the Darby and Yeadon police force both saved a choking infant earlier this year

A mother’s desperate call earlier this year reporting that her 1-year-old baby was choking was answered by two brothers, both police officers, who saved the infant’s life, writes Christie Ileto for 6abc.

Yeadon Police Patrolman Matthew O’Donnell and Corporal Joseph O’Donnell from Darby Borough Police responded to the call.

They jumped into action.

“The baby is completely limp. She says ‘She’s choking, she’s choking,’” Matthew noted.

Joseph and Matthew begin back blows and chest thrusts.

There was no response.

“We could still tell that she was choking, so flipped her back over three more times and the chicken bone came out of her mouth,” Matthew said.

“I have a child of my own that’s young, and to think that something like that could happen to your kid, we would hope that somebody is going to help,” said Joseph.

The 1-year-old is now doing well.

Calls like this are unusual but both brothers receive annual first aid and CPR training just in case.

Matthew has been with Yeadon police for five years. Joseph has been with Darby Borough for almost nine.

They’re father also works with Darby police and another brother is on the force with Matthew in Yeadon.
