The American Red Cross recently presented Lifesaving Awards to three coaches of the wrestling program at the Glen Mills School.

The coaches are Courtney Scheb, a former Glen Mills School employee and assistant wrestling coach;  Marcus Vassilakopoulos, a former Glen  Mills School employee and assistant wrestling coach;  and Matt Shannon, current Glen Mills School employee and former head wrestling coach.

On Jan. 12, 2019, during a wrestling tournament at the Church Farm School, these three men provided CPR to a spectator who went into cardiac arrest.  The man was the grandfather of one of the wrestlers on another team.

Their actions helped sustain the man’s life until medics arrived to take him to the hospital.

The award recognizes those who use their lifesaving skills in an emergency to save or sustain a life.

According to the American Red Cross website, individuals are nominated for one of three American Red Cross Lifesaving Awards with separate awards for professional responders and Red Cross trained individuals and another for those who are not Red Cross trained.

The Lifesaving Awards began In 1911 when an anonymous donor made a $5,000 donation to the National American Red Cross to recognize first aid work by railway men.
