Shaniqua Whitaker of Marcus Hook, the mother of a 5-month-old girl who stopped breathing, is thanking officers and paramedics who saved the girls’ life, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.
The girl’s aunt, Dai’shanik Dickerson, said she was driving to Hobby Lobby May 15 with her niece Shyanne Glen in the back seat when she noticed something wrong.
Dickerson pulled over next to a group of paramedics and police officers who were gathered for a news conference outside the closed Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
“When the officer took [Shyanne] from my hands, she was weak at the point, and he patted her aggressively twice in the back, and she let out the noise,” Dickerson said. “And that was like a breath of fresh air for me.”
Paramedics with VMSC Emergency Medical Services took Shyanne to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, 20 minutes away. She was diagnosed with BRUE, a brief episode where babies stop breathing.
“It’s fortunate that she [my daughter] was OK, but not everyone is going to have the same, you know, outcome,” Whitaker said. “Thank you to the paramedics and the cop who helped do the baby Heimlich and got her to breathe again.”
