Pennsylvania liquor licenses don’t come cheap.

The convenience store chain emerged this week as the winning bidder in a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board auction for two expired restaurant liquor licenses.

It paid $170,000 for a license in Bucks County.

A second license for Delaware County was purchased for $300,000, double the average winning bid, writes Mike Newall for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The two licenses were part of a group of 20 put up for auction.

Wawa did not disclose which store in Bucks County would be selling beer next.

Two Wawas in Bucks County currently sell beer, and the chain has 24 stores in total throughout Pennsylvania that sell beer, said Lori Bruce, a company spokesman.

Pennsylvania allows beer-to-go as long as there is a license from the PLCB.

In 2021, Wawa had only one store that sold beer. It was dubbed the “Stadium Store” for being about two miles from the South Philly sports complex in Philadelphia.

The store has a walk-in beer cooler called the “Beer Cave.”

Wawa now has two weeks to pay for the licenses and six months to file a Pennsylvania license application.
