Romano's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in Essington celebrates its 80th year in business.

Romano’s Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant in Essington, where it’s said the stromboli was invented, is celebrating its 8oth anniversary, writes Tarnala Edwards for 6abc.

Pete Romano Jr. runs the business now like his father and grandfather.

Nazzareno Romano started the business after he immigrated from Italy when the former stone mason decided to get into the pizza business.

The shop opened on Dec. 1, 1944. First known as Essington Pizzeria It moved to Wanamaker Avenue in 1954, said Pete Romano, Sr., previous owner of the restaurant.

They had an Italian stuffed bread on the menu but didn’t know what to call it in America.

In 1950 Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini were on the Isle of Stromboli, making a film called “Stromboli.”

At the time the two married actors had a love affair, creating a “worldwide scandal.”

Cashing in on the publicity, they named the stuffed bread stromboli and the name stuck.

Romano Jr, who just turned 70, said running the pizza shop has been hard work but he enjoys spending time with his dad.

“It’s so gratifying that people remember you for your food, and who you are,” said Romano, Sr. “It means a lot to me.”
