When Benny, a 2-year-old boy in Broomall, died suddenly, the community rallied around the family, draping itself in blue light over the past few days as a show of support.

The ‘Blue for Benny’ movement has taken root in much of Broomall, involving homes and business, writes Chris O’Connell for Fox 29.

Later this week, Lincoln Financial Field will also be draped blue in Benny’s memory.

“You are not alone,” said Nicole Gallo, a family friend. “That’s kind of the message we are trying to send. You are not by yourself. We all feel your grief. We just want to honor this baby.”

A community fundraising effort has raised more than $120,000 in cash and food for the family.

The seemingly healthy 2-year-old came down with a fever last Wednesday and had stopped breathing by the next morning.  Paramedics were called but couldn’t save him.

Benny passed away last Thursday in his family home.

Eric and Natalie Petransky said there was no sign that anything was wrong.

While the official cause of death won’t be known for weeks, doctors believe Benny may have contracted a fast-moving fatal virus.
