The Media Little Leaguers got some surprising support from the Philadelphia Phillies, who arrived Sunday in Williamsport at the little league world series to cheer the team on.
Sadly, it was not enough, writes Ross DMattel, Madeleine Wright, and Danielle Ellis from CBS News Philadelphia.
It looked promising in the 5th inning when Media’s Nathan Hellberg’s single tied the game at two against Rhode Island.
But then the opposing team scored five runs in the sixth inning-ending Media’s little league world series appearance with a 7-2 loss.
Chris O’Brien, 10, his mom and brother, and dozens of others watched the game at the State Street Pub in Media.
“You’ve seen them win so much and see them go out like that, it really hurts a lot,” O’Brien said.
Even so, fans are celebrating the boys from Media who made it to the World Series and caught the attention of the Philadelphia Phillies, and brought national attention once again to Delaware County.
“We are so proud of them,” said Katey McVerry. “They did something that, like, every little boy and every little girl dreams of.”
A parade in Media is planned when the team returns.
