A week at the Jersey Shore has priced itself out of the market for many families opting for cheaper vacations somewhere else, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Kristin Bernstein, a nurse practitioner from Newtown Square, grew up going to Wildwood every summer. The 32-year-old was hoping to share that experience with her own infant and toddler to make new summer memories.

“I don’t think going forward at this rate it’s going to be an option for my family,” said Bernstein.

A small Ocean City condo is costing her and her husband $3,600 for Labor Day week.

Vacation homes in Florida are about half as much and that includes airfare.

Travel specialist Rebecca Wzorek at Mad Hatter Adventures in Broomall is seeing more calls about all-inclusive vacations instead of the more expensive Jersey Shore.

Wzorek gets it. A week in Sea Isle in prime season cost her family of five about $4,500, the same price as an all-inclusive trip to Mexico

“It’s a great quote-unquote vacation,” said Wzorek. “But when you’re going down, you’re still packing up and buying all your food and cooking and cleaning and schlepping to the beach.”
