A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Spar Hill Farm in Kennett Township marks the decade-long fight to preserve the land, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.

On May 13, elected officials flocked to the 100-acre property bound by Burnt Hill Road and the Delaware State Line to honor the farm’s new era. 

Spar Hill has gone through many iterations, but its name originates from a feldspar that was once mined there.

It was first named Way Farm in the 1800s and was managed by the Quakers. Between that time and 1925, the farm evolved to become Shutt Farm. Up until 1940, it was known as a dairy farm. Then, it became Spar Hill Turkey Farm and served as a stomping ground for these festive birds.  

By 1958, the farm raised nearly 45,000 turkeys. The land is now most popular for being a filming location for the hit HBO series Mare of Easttown. In 2018, the township purchased it for $3.2 million.  

Last August, township supervisors signed off on removing dilapidated structures such as sheds, silos, slaughterhouses, barns, residences, walls, and fencing. In April, dozens of volunteers participated in a property-wide clean-up.
