Nicole Simmons will enjoy a rare luxury on Sunday. For Mother’s Day, she plans to just relax, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The mother of 2-year-old Jon Jr. (JJ), Simmons is also a volunteer firefighter for the Garden City Fire Company in Wallingford.

Plus, the 2006 Strath Haven High School graduate runs Simmons Removal, a trash and junk removal company, with her husband Jon.

Simmons grew up in Garden City and was a fixture at the fire company. Her grandmother, Jean Boyle, was president of the women’s auxiliary. Her grandfather Jack Boyle, father Ward Boyle and uncle Jay Boyle were volunteer life member and now her husband is a captain there.

Simmons has volunteered there for 12 years

“My role has evolved a lot since becoming a mother and I have taken a bit of a back seat,” said Simmons. “My husband and I both can’t leave our son, and I have become more careful.”

Simmons has stayed close to her childhood home, moving only four doors away.

“I have really deep roots here,” Simmons said proudly.

She describes motherhood as the “best job I’ve ever had and the most honorable title.”
