Veterans of the Vietnam War will be honored with flags flown around the county and nation on March 29, Vietnam War Veterans Day, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.

The day was established last year when President Donald Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act. The day commemorates the date when the last U.S. troops left Vietnam 45 years ago.

However, many Vietnam veterans around Delaware County are unaware of it, or that there will be special events.

Others lack enthusiasm

Rocco Polidoro, former commander of American Legion Post 227 in Springfield, said most veterans do not want to honor specific days of unjust wars. They prefer to honor the role of “active duty military and our veterans of all wars.”

But Linwood resident Arthur “A.J.” Burn, a Vietnam veteran, has a different perspective. He was happy to hear about a special day to honor Vietnam veterans.

“During the Vietnam War, there were no parades, no welcome homes,” he said. “To get this recognition now is a good thing.”
