Historical artifacts stolen decades ago have been returned to the Delaware County and Haverford historical societies, writes Alex Rose for the Daily Times.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Art Crime Team and law enforcement partners returned 50 stolen historical artifacts during a recent repatriation ceremony, many of them weapons taken from museums in multiple states/

The Delaware County Historical Society received three handguns and a rifle from the early 1900s and World War I, and a sword belonging to the Buckley family that dates from the Civil War.

“They were stolen from DCHS in the 1970s when we were housed at Widener University,” said interim Director Paul Hewes in an email. “There was also a bugle, a bullet pouch, a belt, and a knife with sheath, all from the Civil War.”

The Haverford Historical Society, burglarized April 14, 1979, got back a pewter plate and cup, two horn or antler cups, and a combination candlestick/rushlight 200 to 30 years old.

An investigation dating back to 1968 ended with a guilty plea from Michael K. Corbett of Delaware to possessing stolen property.

An FBI search warrant in May 2017 uncovered numerous stolen items at his home.

Several stolen pieces were stored in 1995 in a Wallingford home.
