Aptly named (but good, clean fun), Amish mud sale season is currently running.

Discover Lancaster invites its neighbors to the east to try something new: a visit to an Amish mud sale.

The Amish mud season is now in full swing through mid-May and provides an experience only found in Lancaster County.

The principal thing a first-time Amish mud sale participant needs to know is this: It is a sale. But mud is about the only item not being vended.

Unique to Lancaster County, Amish mud sales are community auctions that benefit local fire companies. The name is derived from the general condition of the thawing ground in late winter and early spring when the occur.

Held on Saturdays in small towns all over the county, these colorful occasions provide a natural opportunity to mingle with the Plain community as they help to run the sales or enjoy a fun day full of great deals and Pennsylvania Dutch eats themselves.

Observers of a large array of salable inventory might think Everything’s available but the kitchen sink.

But even those dish-washing/food-prep fixtures can be found at an Amish mud sale, along with:

  • Hand-made Amish quilts and furniture
  • Antiques
  • Toys
  • Clothing
  • Housewares

For the truly visionary shopper, an Amish mud sale participant may also be offering livestock or a buggy.

All of it is sold at up to six simultaneous auctions at various locations ‘round the grounds and firehouse, which makes for a truly captivating experience.

Whether one is bidding or just browsing, an additional treat is the hearty and delicious Pa. Dutch fare on offer:

  • Chicken corn soup
  • Funnel cakes
  • Pot pie
  • Birch beer
  • Sticky buns
  • Chicken barbecue
  • Hot cider and coffee

Plenty of attendees who come just to eat.

For newcomers and veterans alike, there’s no more authentic Lancaster County experience than attending the annual Amish mud sale season.
