‘Activist’ Vashti Valentine Helps Others With Her Chester Church

By

Vashti Valentine is not one to sit still when there’s people in need.

The 16-year-old West Philadelphia Girl Scout is working with her church, Asbury-Murphy AME Church in Chester, to give out blessing bags, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.

“I think giving back is very important. That’s what our church is really about,” Valentine said. “Because there are people out there who don’t have what you have.”

Valentine and her mother have been involved with routine outreach services at the church and are working with the congregation now to pack and distribute bags of items to the less fortunate.

She also does community service with Girl Scout Troop 91. She earned her silver award by creating COVID-19 masks for church members.

For her gold award, she plans to start a Black History club.

Valentine recently shadowed 6abbc consumer investigative reporter Nydia Han through the Girl Scout ‘Take the Lead” initiative.

“She is already trying to be a change-maker and an activist and I have so much respect for her and I learned so much today,” Han observed.

Valentine’s career goals lean toward being an author, actress, or history teacher to highlight the lesser-known success stories of minorities in America.
