The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania has recently signed a “Treaty of Renewed Friendship” with the North American Land Trust (NALT).

The signing ceremony took place at Haverford College, reports the North American Land Trust via Newswires.

Shelley DePaul of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania and Amy Bruckner of NALT were the treaty signers.

The Treaty of Renewed Friendship acknowledges the Lenape as the original inhabitants of Pennsylvania and indigenous stewards of the land.

It is not legally binding but the signers agreed that the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania would be supported through cultural and educational programs about the Lenape people.

“Our mission is to permanently conserve and steward natural and cultural resources through innovative land preservation partnerships,” Bruckner said.

Bruckner spent eight days paddling on the Delaware River with the Lenape Nation as part of a multi-state Rising Nation River Journey to raise awareness of the heritage of the Lenape people.

NALT recently acquired Brinton Run Preserve in Chadds Ford and opened it to the public. NALT plans to convert cornfields into pollinator habits and plant native trees. It will also restore an eroded stream.
