A proposed 2 percent increase in the hotel tax in Delaware County to 5 percent could help promote tourism in the county, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Delaware County Council had a first reading May 4 on the proposed ordinance to raise the hotel tax to 5 percent.

The tax would be paid by the operator of the hotel and the booking agent that makes the reservation. It would go into effect Jan. 1, 2023.

“The increase amounts to $2.50 per room per night,” Delaware County Executive Director Howard Lazarus said. “I don’t believe it would be a deterrent to the hotels.”

The average hotel room in the county is $100 to $110 a night.

Delaware County currently has the lowest hotel tax at 3 percent, when compared to surrounding counties.

County Councilwoman Elaine Schaefer added, “The vast, vast majority of Pennsylvania is at 5 percent or more. We are in a distinct disadvantage being at 3 percent to all of our neighbors … We are at a distinct disadvantage in spending towards bringing tourism dollars to our county.”
