Student Nora Deskis Captures Cherished Memories for Wallingford Seniors

By

Nora Deskis, 19, a student at Strath Haven High School, is using her scrapbooking skills to help senior citizens find memories, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.com.

Deskis is working at Chestnut Ridge, a senior living facility in Wallingford. She comes to them through Tall Transitions, an agency that finds unique employment and job training for adults with disabilities.

“When Nora came to Chestnut Ridge, we discovered that she had a great love of scrapbooking,” said Chestnut Ridge’s Life Enrichment Director Lisa Razzi. “And so we began using that love to make memory books at our memory care residence.”

They put Nora to work on the facility’s memory care floor, which was looking for an engagement activity.

Assisted by her job coach, Jodi Esslinger, Nora works with seniors to cut and glue magazine photos of people, places, animals, and food into a binder.

“Everyone has abilities. Everybody has a gift,” said Esslinger, who co-founded Tall Transitions with her family of former special education teachers.

Razzi says Nora’s volunteer work at the facility will help her gain skills she can use elsewhere.

“Or, she can continue with us and see where it goes.”
