Now you can play with a real puppy virtually, thanks to an app invented by Michele Davey, a former nurse living in Haverford, writes Laura Brzyski for Philadelphia Magazine.

The pet therapy app Murphy Cares lets any dog lover interact with a real canine, regardless of location, time or situation.

Davey is a former bedside nurse, with 25 years at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The dogs will follow through with a selection of commands–lifting a paw, doing an army crawl, playing with a toy, going for a walk, lapping up water, and curling up for a nap in a doggy bed.

Davey, a dog lover herself, created Murphy Cares to reduce anxiety in children.

“When COVID hit, anxiety and stress elevated to the extreme, and pet therapy couldn’t be utilized in hospitals due to in-person limitations,” she says. “That’s when we shared our third prototype with young hospital patients last summer.”

Murphy Cares appeals to the playfulness in all of us, she says.

Davey and co-founder Bonnie Offit hope the app will eventually allow users to put their own pets in and feature other animals like cats and horses.
