Neumann University will capture the Christmas spirit with a live nativity re-enactment on December 1 and a holiday concert on December 2.

The university’s annual live nativity is scheduled for Wednesday, December 1, at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Mirenda Center on Convent Road. The program is free and open to the public.

Neumann students, faculty, and staff will re-enact the Franciscan tradition of the crib, performing the live nativity scene and the scripture narration. In addition, the program will feature the sounds of sacred Christmas music, presented by a community choir of university students and parishioners from St. Joseph’s Church in Aston.

St, Francis of Assisi created the first live nativity scene in Greccio, Italy, in 1223. Now a traditional element of Christmas celebrations around the world, the ritual has been celebrated ever since.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m., a petting zoo of manger animals will be on-site to entertain youngsters at the event.  After the re-enactment, all are welcome to meet Santa and enjoy refreshments on the Mirenda Center lawn.

Neumann students and faculty will also capture the holiday spirit on Thursday, December 2, by performing vocal and instrumental musical selections, including traditional, spiritual, and secular holiday favorites. Entitled “In the Spirit of Christmas,” the concert starts at 1:30 p.m. in the university’s Meagher Theatre.

Songs on the program include Winter Wonderland, Angels’ Carol, White Christmas, Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, and Caroling, Caroling.

Selections will be presented by members of the Neumann University Concert Chorale, led by Dr. Yukiko Ishida, and the Neumann University Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Richard Sayers.

In keeping with public health guidelines, masks are required for the concert and seating will be limited so that audience members can spread out inside the 300-seat theater.

The performance is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Forum at Neumann. Admission is $10. Proceeds benefit the Dr. Margaret Mary Kearney student scholarship fund, which assists non-traditional students at the university.
