Villanova University’s law school has received a $13 million gift from its namesake, investment manager Charles Widger and his wife Barbara, writes Jeff Blumenthal for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Charles Widger School of Law will use the gift to grow its professional development and leadership program.

“It is our hope that creating these new initiatives and investing in existing ones will enable the law school to launch into its next great chapter,” Widger said in a statement.

“It is imperative for our lawyers of tomorrow to have the ethical understanding, leadership skills and business acumen to solve the complex problems facing the world today.”

The donation will pay for new positions and new programs, including an endowed associate dean for professional development and leadership.

It will increase faculty research and scholarships, including a “first-of-its-kind” match to young alumni for endowed student scholarships.

Widger has donated $43 million in his lifetime to Villanova University.

He founded Brinker Capital in 1987 as an asset manager arm for the now defunct Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. He’s also been a private attorney and assistant attorney general in Pennsylvania.
