If you’re looking for a good banana split in Delaware County, you might want to try The Sugaree in Newtown Square, writes Kae Lani Palmisano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Sugaree made a list of recommended ice cream shops in the Philadelphia region.
For $7.95, the vintage confectionary shop at 3117 West Chester Pike will give you a version that ‘s also a playful work of art, the article suggests.
The ice cream concoction was invented in 1904, a time of rapid technological advancement.
At Tassell Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, pharmacist David Strickler created it—three scoops of ice cream, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry on a split banana in a boat-shaped glass, topped with pineapple and strawberry sauces, hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries and nuts.
People loved this luxurious dessert that existed thanks to American ingenuity. Ingredients were available because of a developing globalized supply chain and new technology allowed ingredients of varying temperatures to be combined.
A letter, a newspaper story and a “banana boat dish” request to a glassmaker authenticated Strickler’s invention.
The confection was transported to Philadelphia and Atlantic City and took off from there.
