Two water ice shops with locations in Havertown and Chester made The Philadelphia Inquirer’s list of best water ice in Philly, writes Jilian Wilson for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Pop’s Homemade Italian Ice

Filippo “Pop” Italiano sold frozen treats from a pushcart in his South Philadelphia neighborhood back in 1932.

It was only a matter of time before he opened a shop on Oregon Ave. in South Philly. That was followed up by a second store at 150 W. Eagle Road in Havertown.  The Havertown store is open daily noon to 10 p.m.

Siddiq’s Water Ice

Siddiq’s Water Ice started as a food cart at Temple University.  It’s now expanded to two shops, one in West Philly and one in Chester.

It serves water ice with plenty of fruit, including fresh taste varieties like mango-berry, white grape and cantaloupe.

It’s Chester store at 720 W. Ninth St. in Chester is open  Monday to Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 1 to 8 p.m.

Water ice can trace its roots back to Italian families who brought the recipe with them when they moved to the United States and to Philadelphia.
