What Makes Wilmington University Military-Friendly?

Col. Gwyn Parris-Atwell of the Delaware Air National Guard took a recent opportunity to describe some of the challenges that keep active service members from pursuing their educational goals.

“Military students have unpredictable schedules,” she said. “We typically can’t cancel training or deployments to attend college. Years ago, there weren’t any online options, and we had to attend class on campus” — or, in many cases, pass up the opportunity.

However, she noted, Wilmington University’s online degree programs and accessible educators offer a world of possibilities to military students. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing at WilmU while serving in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves. She completed her education with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree that continues to serve her career goals today.

“Each time I had a conflict with my course schedule, my instructors asked me how they could help,” she said.

Student-centered education is just one reason why WilmU is a military-friendly option for building skill sets and advancing careers. Other ways that WilmU works for thousands of active-duty service members, National Guard members, veterans, and their dependents each year include:

•   Flexible. You don’t have to wait long to get started at WilmU. Classes start every eight weeks. Plus, its courses are set up in traditional semesters and accelerated seven-week blocks, and modular courses hold evening and weekend classes to fit your schedule.

•   Affordable. According to U.S. News & World Report, WilmU is one of the most affordable private, nonprofit colleges in the country. Its programs have been approved for funding by military tuition assistance and veterans benefits, and its active duty tuition rates for undergraduate and graduate coursework help to maximize the return on your educational investment.

•   Value for experience. Apply the knowledge you’ve already gained toward your future. WilmU’s generous credit transfer policy and prior learning initiatives add your previously earned college-level credits, as well as military trainings and other work experience, to its more than 150 career-focused degree and certificate programs.

•   Committed to you. WilmU’s Military Affairs Office is here to help, every step of the way. “WilmU ensures a commitment to service members, veterans, and their families by providing access to the resources they’ll need to achieve their academic goals and enhance their success as students,” said Jim Webb, director of military affairs. “We’re here to provide the programs, support services, and advocacy needed to successfully transition from military life into student life and beyond.”

“This university truly defined who I am today,” said Col. Parris-Atwell of her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. “It’s prepared me as an expert clinician, nurse-scientist, military caregiver, and leader.”
