A liquefied natural gas export terminal could be setting up shop on the Delaware River across from Chester and Tinicum Island, writes Will Englund for The Washington Post.

New Fortress Energy wants to build the terminal on the Repauno plant site in Gibbstown, New Jersey.

The terminal would receive liquefied natural gas from northeastern Pennsylvania by train or truck and place it on ships bound for the Caribbean.

Opponents worry about environmental damage from the construction and operation of the terminal. There’s also concern about transporting 3 to 4 million gallons of liquefied natural gas each day through the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

If the terminal is approved, ocean tankers with the natural gas will sail past neighborhoods in Chester, down past Delaware.

The Delaware Riverkeeper Network has opposed the project and hopes President-elect Joe Biden’s concern for his home state of Delaware will bring Executive Office support for their cause.

“He was always protective of Delaware’s coastal resources,” Tracy Carluccio, deputy director of Delaware Riverkeeper Network, said of Biden. “They’re at the bottom of the Delaware River watershed, and they get all the bad stuff that everyone’s dumping upstream.”
