Complaints started piling up again Monday about a mysterious odor that’s been baffling experts in Delaware County for months, reports Matt Petrillo for CBS 3.
Delaware County Emergency Services received more than a dozen calls about the odor. The complaints covered a lot of ground, from Tinicum to Glenolden, Lansdowne and Upper Darby.
Once again, investigators are scrambling to locate its source.
“It’s like a sulfur, smokey,” Glenolden resident Terry Pelham said. “As soon as I got out of the car I could smell it.”
“Something from the creek or something or maybe from the sewage,” Glenolden resident Michael Szymanski said.
“It was overwhelming. I was afraid to smoke. I was like, where is this coming from? I literally thought the gas main had broken,” Glenolden resident Diana Delaney said.
Authorities are saying the odor is consistent with previous odor complaints, which described a natural gas smell. There was speculation in January that it originated down by the river in Chester.
An Odor Investigation Task Force has been created combining agencies from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
The state Department of Environmental Protection is also working on the problem.
