A virtual Friday vigil is planned at the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology in memory of former president, William B. Robinson Jr., who died Monday from complications of COVID-19, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

Robinson enrolled at the former engineering school as a student 50 years ago when it was still in Upper Darby, studying civil engineering.

He graduated in 1969, entered the business world, and returned to be an instructor, trustee and board chair before becoming president in 2017.

The school offers specialized associate’s degrees and certificate programs.

In 1982, it moved to its present 12-acre location on Manchester Avenue in the Media area.

Matt Meyers, executive vice president of the college, said Robinson felt the school could help students who wanted shorter degree programs that focused on careers developing in their communities.

“He oversaw the growth of our nursing program, which nearly doubled, and spearheaded us getting the first regionally accredited program in cannabis education.”

Delaware County Chamber of Commerce President Trish McFarland said the region last an amazing leader.

“His passion for not only education but community partnerships will truly be missed in Delaware County,” she said.
