A new community center is the first step toward a new development standard in Upper Darby that officials hope will attract regional investors, writes Kenny Cooper for whyy.org.

Construction is expected to start next year in Stonehurst, with hope of revitalizing a traditionally underserved neighborhood.

A $1 million grant from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program will fund its first phase.

It replaces a multipurpose building at 7000 Walnut Street.

The “forward-looking building” will include a green roof. It’s accessible to public transportation in a walkable neighborhood close to the business district.

Township residents will have input on what goes inside, anything from  after-school tutoring, basketball  courts to a yoga studio and supplemental classes.

Community meetings will take place in the next few months via Zoom.

There are also plans for more green space in the township, including bike and walking trails.

“We want to set a new standard for development in Upper Darby,” said Upper Darby’s Chief Administrative Officer, Vincent Rongione. “We want to show other people looking to invest in Upper Darby that these are the kind of amenities and buildings and things that Upper Darby residents want and deserve.”
