Wayne-based Eastern Airlines will begin flying out of Philadelphia International Airport Dec. 14 as the airport’s newest carrier, writes Laura Smythe for Philadelphia Business Journal.

It will have twice per week nonstop flights to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and Sata Domingo, Dominican Republic. Its Boeing 767 aircraft can also carry cargo.

“Having Eastern as one of our partners supports a local company and helps connect underserved markets to the Greater Philadelphia region,” said Chellie Cameron, CEO at Philadelphia International Airport.

Passengers will be able to check up to six bags, the highest baggage allowance at the airport.

“We are excited to launch service at our hometown airport, and to offer more non-stop options to the Philadelphia community,” said Steve Harfst, CEO at Eastern Airlines.

Eastern opened up new headquarters last summer at 550 E. Swedesford Road in Wayne, relocating from High Point, North Carolina.

It formed in 2010 as Dynamic International Airlines but following Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, emerged in 2019 as Eastern Airlines.

The name was originally tied to a major domestic airline that ceased operations in the 1990s.

Dynamic acquired the name when it bought the intellectual property rights of Eastern Air Lines.
