191st District State Rep. Joanna McClinton Named State House’s First Woman Minority Leader
State Rep. Joanna McClinton has made Pennsylvania history by being the first woman named minority leader in the State General Assembly, reports Matt Petrillo for Philadelphia.cbslocal.com.
Rep. McClinton, a Democrat, represents the 191st District, which includes Darby Borough, parts of Yeadon Borough and parts of Philadelphia. She was named minority leader in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
“It seems as if we’re turning the way we’ve always done things upside down,” McClinton said. “You know, we’ve always had male leaders.”
McClinton has been a state representative since 2015.
She’s put together an agenda that focuses on fair funding for schools and a living wage for workers.
The representative said she herself was a low wage earner when she served tables, working her way through Villanova Law School.
She pledged to work for Philadelphia and its suburbs.
“It’s very helpful for people who are leading the city like the mayor, like the district attorney, to have me on speed dial and be able to talk about their priorities, their issues, and know they have a true advocate,” McClinton said.
State Sen. Kim Ward of Westmoreland County also made state history by becoming Pennsylvania’s first woman majority leader.
