Philadelphia’s Championship Team This Year Could be Chester’s Philadelphia Union Soccer Team

With the Supporter’s Shield win, the Philadelphia Union soccer team in Chester are legitimately Major League Soccer’s regular season champions, writes Jon Marks for section215.com.

That may be the best it’s going to get for Philadelphia’s sports teams in 2020.

Being the best during the regular season doesn’t have much traction in other American sports, but it’s a big deal in soccer. The Supporter’s Shield was created three years after the MLS was created in 1999, to pay homage to how the game’s played in Europe.

This is the best it’s been for the Union.

In their 10-year history, the Union’s only made the playoffs four times, but never past the Conference Quarterfinals.

But for Philadelphia fans who watched the Phillies fizzle out, who watched the Sixers flame out, and who watched the Flyers run out of steam, this may be the best we’ve got this year.

Sure, the Eagles’ fate is still months away, but they’re probably not a legitimate Super Bowl threat.

So it might be the Union that ends Philadelphia’s championship drought with the MLS Cup. They are now, in Major League Soccer, the team to beat.
