For area colleges, the start of fall classes is quickly approaching and students are moving back to campus.
At Widener University’s campus in Chester, “Move-In Day” is more than unpacking boxes, thanks in part to the efforts of Kate Royer, Widener’s Campus Visit Coordinator, writes Wakisha Bailey for CBS News Philadelphia.
It’s her job to give students and families a warm welcome and a sparkling personality.
“We definitely want them to leave here feeling like they could move here and belong,” Royer said.
For prospective students, the visitor center in Muller Hall is the first stop, and Royer is there in a sequin jacket that makes an annual appearance on Move-In Day.
She greets families with folders and coffee, and sets up personalized tours catered to each student’s major.
“Walking into an admissions office can be intimidating — then they see Kate,” said Courtney Hoover Kelly, Executive Director of Admissions.
Royer also trains and mentors student ambassadors who conduct the campus tours.
One ambassador, Ava, transferred to Widener after struggling elsewhere. Royer helped her find her footing—and a place to belong, said Ava’s mother.
For the Widener Class of 2029, Royer has one message: “Go Pride.”
