Nicole and Kenny Klein wanted to move from Manayunk to a suburban neighborhood where they could walk to at least one restaurant. They found that place in Havertown, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Even better they fell in love with a 1950s stone Colonial, even though the center hall had a pinkish carpet and there was thick, goldfish wallpaper in every room.

Nevertheless, “the house had good bones.”

Kenny is an engineer who likes woodwork and other home projects so he didn’t mind a little work.

“We didn’t want it to look like a new house,” said Nicole, 42, a Realtor with Keller Williams. “We wanted to bring back the charm of the old house with an open, airy, light style.”

They added a two-story addition and turned a converted in-law suite into a large great room and kitchen on the first level.

They added a primary suite on the second floor and an additional guest room.

One of their favorite rooms, the main bedroom, features a cathedral ceiling and an oversized window that looks out on a fenced-in backyard with possibly the largest tree in the neighborhood.
