New App Let’s You Know if You’ve Been Exposed to the Coronavirus

By

A new smartphone app, COVID Alert PA, lets people find out if they may have been exposed to the coronavirus, reports the timesleader.com.

The free app is available to smartphone users as a download from the Apple App store or Google Play store,

It is available in English and Spanish.

The app was launched Tuesday by Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf and Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine.

When someone tests positive for coronavirus a case investigator will ask if they have the app and are willing to use it to notify anyone else with the app who has been in close contact with them in the past 14 days.

If they agree, they enter a six-digit code and a notification is sent out to anyone with the app who may have been in close contact with the subject.

The app does not store location or personal information, or identify anyone close enough to be exposed.

The user can also see up-to-date COVID-19 case information, hospitalizations and deaths by county.

There’s also a feature to monitor symptoms even if the user has not tested positive.

The app will work with the state of Delaware’s app, which was released last week, and it will be compatible with other states when they launch on the NearForm platform, state officials say.
