Bernadette Dougherty’s passion for flowers just isn’t enough these days for her to keep the Edgemont Flower Shop open, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Times have changed, and so have people’s flower-buying habits.  So, as of Aug. 31, her business of 48 years, nine months and 16 days will be no more.

“The flower business is not what it used to be … We also don’t live in a society that entertains like they used to. You don’t sit down at the table and eat with a nice centerpiece. We don’t send as many flowers to the hospital because people are in the hospital for such a short time so that’s cut back.”

Today, folks buy flowers on line or at supermarkets.

Then, of course, there’s this year’s coronavirus. That meant no proms, no Easter flowers, no graduation flowers. Weddings were cancelled. Mother’s Day fell a little flat.

The virus also made it harder to get the flowers from suppliers.

She’s sad about the loss of another tradition, another style of shopping that’s disappearing.

“But, I still love the business. I thoroughly enjoy the flower business.”
