Delaware County communities are cancelling, postponing or modifying 4th of July plans this year because of the coronavirus, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

Fireworks and parades are cancelled for Clifton Heights, Upper Darby, Springfield, Lansdowne, Radnor, Collingdale, Bethel, Narberth and Thornbury.

“Unfortunately, we just didn’t move to green fast enough for things that need to be planned,” said Vincent Rongione, Upper Darby chief administrative officer. “It’s a weird year.  We’re all trying to make the best of it.”

Ridley Park has moved its fireworks to its Oct. 11 Fall Festival. Aston and Bethel have postponed indefinitely.

Norwood will raise the flag and fire the cannon at 8:30 a.m. July 4. They plan a fireworks display in the fall.

Glenolden and Marple Newtown are having house decorating contests. In Glenolden’s “Social Distance the 4th”, photos will be displayed on-line and a winner will receive a $200 gift certificate to Roy Tweedy’s Butcher Shop.

Marple Newtown parade organizers are featuring a “Red, White and YOU!” house decorating contest.

A map will allow residents to drive by and enjoy the displays.

Aldan has not yet cancelled its July 4th celebration; and is considering a car-only event.
