After recording a 20-percent jump in sales of its potato chips in March compared to the same period last year, Nottingham-based Herr Foods had to increase production to meet the growing demand, writes Andrew Seidman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Ordinarily, the company produces between five and six tons of potato chips every hour at its Nottingham facility.

“We definitely offer a food that is considered a comfort food,” said Herr Foods chief executive Ed Herr.

Additionally, he said, Herr’s potato chips are an affordable option at a time when a growing number of households are forced to count every penny.

“You can get a pretty good-size bag of chips for a couple of bucks,” said Herr.

In early April, sales came back down to normal, but now, they seem to be picking back up.

“What we’re starting to notice now, just with a little bit of warmer weather and people kind of using up their pantry supply,” Herr said, “we’re starting to see the stores get a little busier again.”
