Feeding the pizza needs of Drexel Hill for 18 years, Jano’s Italian Pizza Kitchen officially closed its doors on Burmont Road at the end of April, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

“It wasn’t the virus at all, not at all.  It was just time,” said owner Jamie MacLaughlin, who’s been in the restaurant business since his teen years.  “There’s happy tears to be shed.  A young kid came in and bought it and he’s going to continue the business.”

The new business is expected to open in late May.

“We have built many wonderful memories over the years. The smiles, tears, compliments and critiques are all things that make the fabric of who we are today,” MacLaughlin said.

The pandemic shutdown caused a 30 percent drop in business for the first 10 days, but then it picked up again. Sales were down about 10 percent over the previous year at the time of closing.

When the announcement came on Facebook, the community response was overwhelming.

“Sad to hear.  Only place I bought pizza for 15 years,” Len Griffin posted on the shop’s Facebook page. “Everyone that worked there was great and fun to know.”
