County Offers to Help Delco Workers Impacted By Refinery, Hospital Closings

By

County officials are offering help to Delaware County workers laid off from the refinery and Hahnemann Hospital closings, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Delaware County News Network.

John J. Daly, executive director of the Delaware County Office of Workforce Development, reported there are 1,044 employees affected by the closing of the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery, 634 union staff and 410 non-union. Of those, 553 are over 50 years old.

Another 2,572 workers are affected by the closing of Hahnemann University Hospital.

Daly’s office will host a Rapid Response Session Aug. 9 for laid off refinery workers at the Delaware County Community College’s STEM Center from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

County Councilman Brian Zidek spoke about the importance of these sessions.

“When events like this transpire, people need the services,” he said. “It’s comforting to know that you are there, that there are resources available, (that) there are things that are available for citizens to be retrained or to find another employer perhaps.”

Daly also referred workers to Pennsylvania CareerLink offices in Chester at 710 Crosby Street and at Delaware County Community College’s Marple campus, 901 Media Line Road.
