Manufacturers are cranking out more toilet paper than ever before, yet demand never seems satisfied, writes Miles Bryan for WHYY.org.

“I never expected such an infatuation with toilet paper as we see right now,” said Marcal Paper CEO Rob Baron.

In Chester, the; Kimberly Clark paper mill only produces one kind of toilet paper, Scott 1000, a single ply brand. Normal capacity is 2 million rolls a day.

The mill’s 570 employees are turning out “a lot more” said plant manager Jeff Hutter, without naming a specific number.

The plant has actually reduced the number of products it makes just to maximize Scott 1000 output, and it’s still struggling to keep up.

“It’s still pretty hand-to-mouth right now,” Hutter said.

The plant promotes social distancing and does a daily temperature check on its employees.

A Kimberly Clark spokesperson could not say whether anyone at the plant had tested positive for COVID-19 by deadline.

According to the Chester County Health Department, as of Sunday, May 3, the city of Chester had 214 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and four COVID-19-related deaths.
