The Philadelphia Union, along with the rest of major league soccer, recently unveiled new jerseys from Adidas, writes Jonathan Tannenwald for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The jerseys have three big, bright stripes on the right shoulder, a long-standing Adidas design.

Those stripes drew criticism from fans who feel the brand name stripes limits the creativity of individual team jerseys.

The Union’s jerseys have gold stripes on a blue shirt. The snake from the team’s crest appears on the front.

Adidas pulled out an old design with ties to American soccer and the world’s game to give the jerseys a retro look in honor of the MLS’ 25th anniversary.

In the early ’90s, the U.S. national team wore Adidas jerseys with three similar stripes. So did the national teams of Germany and France, among others, and club teams including England’s Liverpool.

“This is iconic to Adidas football,” said Riley Mahoney, a senior merchandise manager at Adidas. “When we were in talks with the league about what we were going to do for their 25th [season] celebration, we wanted to go back into our archives and find something that could help bring that story to life.”
