Strath Haven High School graduate John Harrar had to make a tough choice between continuing his football or basketball career on the collegiate level, writes Thomas Schlarp for the Daily Collegian.

The 6-foot-9 native of Wallingford had been balancing the two sports.

Harrar’s first love was basketball. He started playing football, though, to help out when he saw the program’s numbers dwindle, and football coach Kevin Clancy immediately recognized his talent.

“When he came out for the team his junior year, his learning curve was so fast,” said Clancy. “He was a top player in our league halfway through his junior year.”

However, after leading Strath Haven to a spectacular basketball season as a senior, his focus returned to his first love. So Harrar arrived at Penn State with a scholarship this summer to begin preparations to play Big Ten basketball.

“Playing both has actually helped me. Football helped me bring physicality to basketball. I think I made the right decision by choosing basketball,” said Harrar.
